Selkirk College turns food waste into farm fuel for a greener future

Selkirk College is earning national recognition for its organic waste diversion initiative, which supports local farms and combats climate change. As part of Colleges and Institutes Canada’s (CICan) ImpAct Climate Campus Living Labs project, the college received $70,000 to purchase two FoodCyclers that convert organic kitchen waste into nutrient-rich compost. This reduces waste volume by up to 90% and benefits local farms like Clutch Farm in Salmo, which uses the compost to grow fresh produce. The project engages students in hands-on sustainability efforts and diverts over 8,000 kg of waste annually. CICan’s report highlights Selkirk College’s leadership in climate action. By fostering circular economy practices, the initiative strengthens local food security and reduces the environmental footprint of waste disposal. Learn more about this initiative.
