Tennis Canada plans to transform their event into a waste-free tournament by 2030

The National Bank Open (NBO), one of Canada’s premier tennis events, is aiming to become a net-zero, waste-free tournament by 2030, thanks to a collaboration with University of Waterloo researchers Dr. Jennifer Lynes and graduate student Kari Gunton. Building on a strong environmental commitment, the team implemented waste audits, surveys, and creative communication strategies to boost fan engagement. A gamified waste-sorting station with a prize wheel helped increase the landfill diversion rate by 16% from the previous year. This year, they’ve introduced enhanced staff and volunteer training, partnered with local charities to donate surplus food, and teamed with Waste Management to further reduce landfill contributions. Pre-event sustainability messaging now encourages fans to bring reusable items and use public transit. Long-term efforts include transitioning to electric vehicles and improving carbon offset practices. Gunton, a former tennis competitor, believes NBO is leading the charge in sustainable sports and hopes it sets a standard for others. Learn more about this plan.
