Toronto seabins diverts tens of thousands of plastic pieces

In an effort to reduce and study single-use plastics and microplastics in our waterways, Ports Toronto and the University of Toronto Trash Team lead The PortsToronto Seabin Program. The seabins act like a vacuum cleaner on the surface of the water to collect all floating debris, including plastics as small as 2 millimetres. Over a seven-week period in the summer of 2021, the seabins diverted more than 230,000 pieces of small plastic from polluting the Toronto harbour. Read about how the program uses this waste information to increase waste literacy and inform research-based solutions in the community.
