Turning recycled plastic into 152 million buttons

H&M Foundation’s $11 million initiative, Saamuhika Shakti, is uniting ten local experts and NGOs across sectors in Bengaluru, India, to turn plastic waste into a valuable resource while also employing waste pickers. In India, waste pickers are the largest driving force behind recycling and are crucial to the country’s waste management system. Once the post-consumer plastic waste is collected, it is flaked, washed and provided to button suppliers, resulting in 152 million buttons on garments sold worldwide. The initiative aims to address gaps in the waste management system to promote an inclusive circular economy. Learn more.
