Green Salon Collective, a group of UK hairdressers, environmental experts, and eco-campaigners is repurposing hair products and waste in salons. Hair foils, hair tint, boxes and chemical bleach for colouring are all being recycled in salons across the UK. Now, the Green Salon Collective is repurposing old hair in more ways than one. The lipophilic material in hair repels water but actively absorbs oils, making it ideal for oil spills. According to experts, a kilogram of hair can absorb up to eight litres of oil. Hair is also high in nitrogen, making it an excellent fertilizer. Learn more about how their chemical waste is used to generate electricity.
