What happens to castoff CDs?

The CD Recycling Center of America stores approximately 40,000 pounds of discs which are then pulverized into raw polycarbonate plastic. These polycarbonate granules, which take one million years to decompose in a landfill, can be used to mold durable items for cars, home building materials and eyeglasses.
