Researchers have discovered a way to turn plastic waste into soap

Researchers at Virginia Tech have found a method of upcycling plastics into surfactants, a wetting agent that is used in creating detergent and soap. Polyethylene, one of the most popular plastics used today, has a chemical structure of long carbon chains that is similar to the fatty acids used as chemical precursors to soap.
