The Understanding Ontario’s Batteries Regulation Learning Series Events were designed to help those affected by the regulation understand and meet their obligations, and participate in the new market for recycling, reusing and refurbishing batteries. 2020

In February 2020, the Government of Ontario released the Batteries Regulation. RPRA held several events throughout 2020 to support affected stakeholders with their obligations.

On May 7, 2020, RPRA’s Registrar Pat Moran hosted a webinar to help producers of batteries understand their obligations. Topics included:

  • the definition of a producer
  • collection and management requirements
  • exemptions
  • reporting requirements and contractual relationships
  • working with producer responsibility organizations (PROs)

RPRA also presented at a webinar hosted by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) on March 11, 2020 to explain how municipalities are specifically affected by the regulation.

From April 1 to April 22, 2020, RPRA’s Registrar Pat Moran hosted a weekly online series about the Batteries Regulation. Topics included:

Week 1: April 1 – municipalities, service providers, and producers

Week 2: April 8 – working with producer responsibility organizations (PROs)

Week 3: April 15 – meeting producer collection requirements

Week 4: April 22 – exemptions

On March 10, 2020, RPRA provided an overview of the new Batteries Regulation and regulatory framework for battery recycling in Ontario. Topics included:

  • how to register and report to RPRA
  • promotion and education requirements
  • working with a producer responsibility organization (PRO)
