The Circular Innovation Council is launching an award-winning food rescue and organic waste diversion pilot in partnership with the Town of Westlock and Strathcona County. The initiative aims to reduce food waste in the industrial, commercial, and institutional sector, Canada’s largest food waste generator. Subsidized collections will begin in January 2024. The pilot project consolidates organic waste collection among neighboring businesses and institutions to improve efficiency and affordability. Surplus edible food is redirected to community service agencies, while organic waste is composted and applied to local regenerative mixed farms.
